Firkin Crane Theatre, Cork: Weekly Class with Helga Deasy

Helga Deasy, Cork City Dance Artist in Residence at Firkin Crane 2021-23, will teach weekly professional class on Thursday 19 October.

Helga's class focuses on exploration, play and connection, with the aim to foster bodily awareness, to find expressivity and to develop creative skills. It is informed by a choreological approach, which is the contemporary development of Rudolf Laban’s principles for the performing arts.

We will take time to connect with the body and our breath as a movement source. Drawing from the research process behind the making of Helga’s most recent work 'Built on Bridges' we will explore structured improvisation frameworks and play, move, create and discover performative qualities.

Helga Deasy (Ireland/Germany) is a choreographer, dance artist and dance facilitator. Grounded in choreology and somatics, her practice spans performance making, cross-disciplinary collaboration and socially engaged dance. She has performed and presented work in Ireland, Germany, the UK and the US and received awards from the Arts Council, Cork City Council, Dance Ireland and Culture Ireland among others.

Helga feels passionate about the empowering potential of dance - she works in arts and health settings, is a facilitator on the Teacher Artist Partnership Programme and an early-years practitioner with Graffiti Theatre Company. She is Cork City Dance Artist in Residence at Dance Cork Firkin Crane 2021 - 2023 and works as Alumni Ambassador for Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance.
