Firkin Crane Theatre, Cork: The Mixtape Showcase

Musical Neighbourhoods, The Kabin Studio & Creative Tradition present The Mixtape Showcase

Musical Neighbourhoods, The Kabin Studio & Creative Tradition present The Mixtape Showcase at Dance Cork Firkin Crane, Cork.
Featuring more than 20 performers from The Kabin Studio's Adult Song Project and Creative Tradition’s Club Ceoil Knocknaheeny, this special showcase brings together an extraordinary collection of original music, songs, stories and performances created by local adults through weekly workshops in Knocknaheeny.

Audiences can expect a unique mix of rap, hip hop, spoken word, drum and bass, traditional Irish music, pop and original songwriting, with every piece reflecting the experiences, humour, challenges and creativity of the people performing it.

Many participants first arrived at The Kabin Studio as parents or grandparents supporting young people involved in workshops. Inspired by the confidence and creativity they witnessed in their children and grandchildren, they decided to step into the studio themselves. Some had never written a song, performed on stage or picked up a microphone before joining the project.

Among the performers are Sally Crowley and Maureen Cullinane, whose journeys as older rappers attracted national attention through the Irish Examiner & Ray D’Arcy’s show on RTE Radio 1. Sally's song Never Too Old To Rap has become a fitting anthem for a group that proves creativity doesn't come with an age limit.

Developed through Musical Neighbourhoods, with support from The Kabin Studio, Cork City Council and Cork Education and Training Board, the Adult Song Project was created to ensure that opportunities for music-making don't end at 18. The programme provides a space for adults to write, record, perform, learn new skills and build friendships through music. In parallel, Musical Neighbourhoods also runs a weekly Tin Whistle and Sean-nós singing workshop for adults in collaboration with Creative Tradition. These three community music initiatives based in Knocknaheeny regularly collaborate to ensure that the northside has access to multiple creative and expressive opportunities within their local community.

The evening will also feature performances by participants who have grown up attending The Kabin Studio, Rory McGovern and band, Jackie Rea, Pacino Brady, musicians from Club Ceoil Knocknaheeny, and a number of special intergenerational moments, including younger Kabin participants joining their parents and family members on stage.

The Mixtape Showcase is a celebration of community, creativity and lifelong learning, and a reminder that it's never too late to find your voice.
