Firkin Crane Theatre, Cork: Professional Class with Luke Murphy

Dance Artist in Residence, Luke Murphy, teaches a technique class

I understand technique as a host of universal movement ideas, unbound by one aesthetic or movement style. Technique class uses the ritualistic nature of daily self-discovery to connect the mind and body. Building through a series of movement sequences on the floor, standing and moving through space the dancer will explore gravity, spiral, momentum, balance as an active cycle and the harmony between efficient free movement and clear form. Class will follow a structure of a set group warmup to open the bodies range, stabilise joints, activate the muscles followed by initial movement sequences using the floor as a support leading to improvisational tasks to find individual movement availability, pathways and vocabulary.

Luke Murphy is an Irish writer, director, choreographer, and performer working at the intersection of theatre and dance. In 2015 he founded the company Attic Projects, which serves as an incubator, facilitator, and producer of his work. Spanning stage, film, installation, and site-specific/ immersive contexts, Attic Projects creates pieces rooted in a visceral physical language that uncovers the universal within the deeply personal. Murphy has created and produced more than 12 dance theatre
works that have been presented throughout Ireland, the US, the UK, Germany, Australia, and Hong Kong.

His most recent productions include the multi-awardwinning Volcano and Scorched Earth. He lives in Cobh, County Cork, Ireland, and is currently Cork City Dance Artist in Residence at Dance Cork Firkin Crane.
