Professional Class with Caroline Meaden

Caroline Meaden’s class aims to prepare the mind and body for sensitive, imaginative and engaged movement practice. Beginning with an emphasis on tuning the attention to find balance and softness, we then move on to phrase material that explores dynamic shifts, rhythmical phrasing and a playful blend of technical rigour with impulse and expression.

Caroline is a dance artist and speech pathologist based in Naarm/Melbourne. Her performance works foreground dance as a formal medium while experimenting with theatrical, visual and text-based elements. These works embrace a pluralistic ethos - with dissonant, collage-like structures that integrate text and dance without defaulting to a dance-theatre sensibility. Rather, they reference and disrupt theatre conventions and devices (narrative, gesture, exposition) through the application of choreographic logics and structures to disperse meaning.

Caroline has presented work as part of the collaboration, Alice Will Caroline as well as solo-authored pieces. Her works have been presented at Dance Massive, Next Wave, Festival of Live Art, the Keir Choreographic Award (Dancehouse and Carriageworks), the MEL&NYC Festival and Melbourne Fringe. She has been nominated for a Green Room award for performance, and been awarded the Chloe Munro Fellowship. She was recently the Lucy Guerin Inc Artistic Director in Residence (with her collaboration, Alice Will Caroline), and Artist in Residence at Union House Theatre, Melbourne University. As a performer Caroline has collaborated in the work of artists including: Phillip Adams Balletlab, Shelley Lasica, Michelle Heaven, Sandra Parker, Monica Bill Barnes, Reckless Sleepers and others.
