Amrita Hepit teaches a workshop on fiction and beginnings - TO RINSE & REPEAT

TO RINSE & REPEAT - A workshop on fiction and Beginnings

This workshop investigates the possibilities of constructing fiction from autobiographical elements, choreography and the idea of the divided self.

Led by choreographer and artist Amrita Hepi, participants will be lead through a warm up and experiment with using text and performative improvisational material. Participants will be asked to use their own text from historical obsessions, post-colonial narratives, dance and images.
As well as movement and physical languages, we’ll explore research and writing as starting points, bringing together dance and text.

Amrita Hepi is an award-winning First Nations choreographer and dancer from Bundjalung, Australia and Ngapuhi,New Zealand territories. Her interest as an artist is in the idea of archive; particularly in relation to the body and how it is organised by ancestry/people/events and environment. By coalescing fact and fiction, memoir and ethnography, the local and singular into the performance/art work she makes. Her work has taken various forms - film, performance, sculpture, text, lecture and participatory installation.

Amrita trained at NAISDA and Alvin Ailey NYC, and is a critically acclaimed artist, having twice been the winner of the People's Choice Award at the Keir Choreographic Awards, and was named one of Forbes Asia 30 under 30, and has shown work and been commissioned nationally and internationally.
