Presented as part of Cork Midsummer Festival
Foot-tapping, hip-twisting Country OK is a celebration of dance from the heart of Cork City. Invoking the spirit of dance halls and dancing bodies, Country OK dance event is a rollicking celebration of live performance, live music and a party that invites you to let loose and join in.
Country OK is a new dance event created by Cork City dancer and choreographer Siobhán Ní Dhuinnín and commissioned by Cork Midsummer Festival, featuring an inter-generational dance cast from communities across Cork. Joined by six professional dancers; Lisa Cliffe, Marion Cronin, Maeve Kelleher, Molly Kelly and Amir Sabra, with live music by members of The Tan Jackets the event takes place in the South Parish Community Centre just off Douglas Street. Following the performance will be a dance party where audiences are welcome to dust off their boots and get moving.
Originally inspired by a visit to the former Redmond’s GAA Clubhouse on Tower Street and the vibrant dance community that inhabited that space, Siobhán’s intention is to share a love for dance that is felt collectively and to invite the audience to joyfully let loose on the dance floor. The cast have been rehearsing weekly since the end of April with dancers learning and creating movement and getting booted and suited with vintage western wear provided by Wayward & Co.
Siobhán says “It has been very inspiring to see dancers from all walks of life coming together, there is nothing like performing to live music and we are excited to share this and dance with young and old alike”.
Musicians Robbie Baron, Solamh Kelly, Cathal MacGabhann and Caoilian Sherlock bring live music from across the decades. Country OK will have you foot-tapping and hip-twisting to the heart-wrenching songs of country music – and the exhilarating nature of a fleeting moment of dancing together.
Commissioned by Cork Midsummer Festival and supported by Arts Council & Dance Cork Firkin Crane, Country OK will take place from 7.00pm-9.00pm (inc. interval) on Saturday 15 June & Sunday 16 June 2024 in South Parish Community Centre, Sawmill Street, Cork.
