Firkin Crane Theatre, Cork: Hamlet by the Cork Shakespearean Company

The Cork Shakespearean Company returns to Dance Cork Firkin Crane with their production of Hamlet this November

Mourning the death of his father, Hamlet is confronted by a ghost, which informs him that the new king, Claudius (the late King’s brother and Hamlet’s uncle) is the murderer. In a rash and rage-filled moment, Hamlet kills the Lord Polonius, believing the hidden figure to be his uncle and is sent to England. Upon his return, he is challenged to a duel by Polonius’ son, Laertes. Claudius and Laertes conspire to poison Hamlet and, as a result, both of them, Hamlet, and Hamlet’s mother all die; leaving the throne open to a vengeful Norwegian prince.

The Cork Shakespearean Company- ‘The Loft’ - is an amateur theatre company based in the Shandon area of Cork city, focusing almost exclusively on the works of William Shakespeare. Since their inception in 1924 by the late Fr. J.C. O'Flynn, many people have passed through their doors and have both remained with the company but also gone on to become highly successful in the field of theatre. Its’ warm, friendly, social atmosphere makes it the perfect beginning, stepping stone and in some cases, almost a second home for the enthusiastic theatre lover, whether it be on stage, back stage or any other aspect of a theatre company. Now in their 99th year, they look forward to celebrating their centenary in 2024 and continuing to bring the inimitable works of Shakespeare to the people of Cork for many years to come.
